BURGAS REGION IS INCLUDED IN THE NATIONAL NETWORK FOR ADULT LEARNING

Following an invitation of the District Governor Valtcho Cholakov the Ministry of Education and Science presented at the headquarters of the district administration Burgas the new national program and the electronic platform for adult education funded by the European Structural Funds. The deputy regional governor Sevdalina Turmanova announced that the area is involved in in the national network of adult learning and Burgas will be the first city that will host in October this year the Days of Lifelong Learning.

“The issue of adult education is painful for Bulgaria. The proportion of 15 year olds who have insufficient knowledge in reading, mathematics and science is below the critical level of literacy – 41%. According to leading European targets this share should be below 15%. 2% of Bulgaria’s population admits they are illiterate and cannot read and write. All this is a problem for their realization in the labor market”- commented during the meeting Valentina Deykova from the Ministry of Education.

The other issue, on which was focused the audience’s attention was the dropping out of the educational process of students in high school. Throughout the country this indicator annually increases, but the good exception is the region of Burgas, where the number of dropouts decreases. It became clear that Bulgaria and Romania take the last places in EU on participation of the population aged 25-64 in lifelong learning.
